"Aakhiri Sauda" is a famous poem by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, known in English as "The Last Bargain." The poem focuses on the quest for the true meaning and satisfaction of life. The poet tries to make bargains with different people but none satisfy him. Ultimately, the innocence and love of a child give him the peace he was searching for.

(Major Topics)

(Theme of the Poem)

The main theme of the poem is the search for true happiness and satisfaction in life, which is not found in wealth, power, or beauty, but is attained through selfless feelings.

The poet tries to make bargains in different spheres of life – first with a king (power), then with a rich merchant (wealth), then with a beautiful woman (beauty). But none of these bargains satisfy him. Finally, a poor child offers to play with him, with no conditions or selfishness. Here the poet experiences true happiness.

(Summary of the Poem)

The poem begins with a man searching for work. First, he meets a king who offers him a bargain of power, but the poet refuses. Then, a rich merchant offers him money, but he also refuses. Third, a beautiful woman tries to allure him with her smile, but the poet does not find true happiness in that either. Finally, a poor child invites him to play selflessly. This is the 'last bargain' where the poet finds satisfaction and spiritual peace.

(Structure of the Poem)

This poem is written in free verse, with no fixed rhyme scheme. The use of 'I' makes it autobiographical. There are four main episodes – bargaining with the king, the merchant, the beautiful woman, and finally, with the child.

(Symbols and Metaphors)

Power is symbolized by the king, wealth by the merchant, beauty by the woman, and innocence by the child, which represents selfless love and true happiness.

(Message of the Poem)

The poem teaches us that true satisfaction and happiness in life do not lie in external things like wealth, power, or beauty. These are all temporary. True happiness lies in selfless love, innocence, and simplicity.

(Poet's Point of View)

Tagore believes that the most important wealth in life is love and innocence. He shows how humans run after material pleasures, but ultimately find spiritual satisfaction in innocence.

(Line-by-line Explanation)

First Stanza

"Come and hire me," I cried, while in the morning I was walking on the stone-paved road. Sword in hand, the King came in his chariot. He held my hand and said, "I will hire you with my power." But his power counted for nought, and he went away in his chariot.

The poet was searching for work on the road. The king comes in his chariot with a sword and offers the poet a job with his power, but the poet finds no satisfaction in it and refuses.

Second Stanza

In the heat of the mid-day the houses stood with shut doors. I wandered along the crooked lane. An old man came out with his bag of gold. He pondered and said, "I will hire you with my money." He weighed his coins one by one, but I turned away.

In the midday heat, the poet wanders in deserted alleys. An old rich man offers him money, but the poet rejects that offer too.

Third Stanza

It was evening. The garden hedge was all aflower. The fair maid came out and said, "I will hire you with a smile." Her smile paled and melted into tears, and she went back alone into the dark.

In the evening, a beautiful maiden offers the poet a job with her smile, but her smile fades and she goes back sadly. The poet does not find true happiness in this offer either.

Fourth Stanza

The sun glistened on the sand, and the sea waves broke waywardly. A child sat playing with shells. He raised his head and seemed to know me and said, "I hire you with nothing." From thenceforward, that bargain struck in child's play made me a free man.

On the seashore, a child is playing with shells. He calls the poet, "I hire you with nothing." Here, the poet finds true freedom and happiness.
