Introduction to the Chapter

At the time of independence, India’s economic condition was extremely poor. Nearly two centuries of colonial rule exploited Indian society, economy, and resources. This chapter assesses the state of the Indian economy on the eve of independence, its key features, the impact of colonial policies, and the challenges faced by independent India.

(Major Topics)

(Colonialism and Indian Economy)

(Definition):

Colonialism is a system where a country (colonial power) establishes political and economic control over another country (colony) and exploits its resources.

(Impact of Colonialism in India):

British rule destroyed India’s traditional economy. Agriculture, cottage industries, trade, and other sectors were subservient to British interests. There was excessive exploitation of Indian resources and capital drain.

(State of Agriculture)

(Features):

India was mainly an agrarian country; about 70-75% of the population depended on agriculture. Farming used traditional techniques, had low productivity, and was insecure. The land tenure systems (Zamindari, Mahalwari, Ryotwari) exploited farmers.

(Colonial Policies):

Promotion of cash crops (like cotton, indigo, opium). Food shortages and famines were common. Lack of facilities like irrigation, fertilizers, and seeds.

(Example):

The Bengal Famine of 1943, where millions died of starvation.

(State of Industries and Cottage Industries)

(Traditional Industries):

India was famous for cotton textiles, handicrafts, paper, metals, etc., since ancient times.

(British Impact):

Indian cottage and handicraft industries declined due to British policies. Machine-made British goods were imported, and heavy duties were imposed on Indian products. Millions of artisans became unemployed.

(Modern Industries):

Limited development: mainly jute, textiles, iron and steel. British controlled capital, technology, and management.

(Example):

India’s foreign trade was subordinated to British interests. Major exports: raw materials (cotton, jute, opium). Major imports: finished goods, especially British machine-made textiles.

(Drain of Wealth):

Massive outflow of wealth from India to Britain (Drain Theory – Dadabhai Naoroji). Even though India had a trade surplus, payments were made for British administrative expenses, wars, pensions, etc.

In the 19th century, almost 50% of India’s trade was with Britain.

(Infrastructure)

(Transport):

Before 1921, India’s population growth rate was very low. High death rate, population almost stable.

(Reasons for Population Pattern):

  • 1921: 'जनसंख्या का महान विभाजन वर्ष' (Year of Great Divide)।

Lack of health services, epidemics, famines, malnutrition. 1921: ‘Year of Great Divide’ in population.

(National Income)

(Status):

National income was very low. Per capita income was much less compared to European countries.
