In a nutshell: The Revolt of 1857 was the first major uprising against British rule in India, with far-reaching political, social, and economic implications. This chapter covers its causes, events, impacts, and key personalities.

The Revolt of 1857, also called the First War of Independence, Sepoy Mutiny or the Indian Rebellion, was a widespread and revolutionary movement against the rule of the British East India Company. It represented the discontent of various sections of Indian society – soldiers, peasants, landlords, artisans and rulers. The revolt shook the foundation of British rule and laid the groundwork for India's modern independence movement.
