(The Three Orders)
In Medieval Europe, society was mainly divided into three orders – the clergy (priests), the nobility (warriors), and the peasants (workers). These classes formed the basis of social, religious, and economic organization, which laid the foundation of feudal society.
(Introduction)

Each order had its specific role, rights, and duties. In medieval Europe, feudalism structured society, where relationships were based on land ownership and agriculture.
(Major Topics)
(Definition and Origin of the Three Orders)
(Definition)
The Three Orders was a social system dividing society into three groups: Clergy (responsible for religious functions), Nobility/Warriors (responsible for protection and governance), and Peasants/Workers (responsible for production and services).
(Origin)

5-Mark Questions (5
Describe in detail the 'Three Orders' system of medieval Europe. In medieval Europe, society was divided into three main orders – clergy, nobility, and peasantry. The clergy was responsible for religious rituals, education, and morality, owning vast lands and collecting taxes. The nobility, including kings, dukes, barons, and knights, managed security, governance, and justice. The peasantry was the largest class, working the land, paying many taxes, and having limited freedom. The relationships among orders were based on land ownership, religious legitimacy, and labor. Feudalism strengthened this system, with exchange of land for services. Over time, the growth of trade, towns, and new ideas brought changes, and the French Revolution ended this system.
Analyse the role and power of the clergy. The clergy was the highest and most influential class. Church officials—pope, bishops, priests—were responsible for rituals, education, guidance, and social control. The church owned large tracts of land, giving it economic power, and collected 'tithe' tax. It had authority in religious matters through ecclesiastical courts, provided moral guidance to all classes, and gave legitimacy to kings. The church’s power was so great that it influenced politics and governance. Over time, its powers declined due to the Reformation, Renaissance, and the spread of scientific ideas.
Describe in detail the condition and problems of the peasantry. The peasantry was the largest and lowest class. Peasants worked hard on the land; most were serfs, bound to the land and not free. They paid various taxes—rent, tithe (to the church), and tolls (road tax). Their lives were insecure due to wars, natural calamities, and exploitation. They were under the nobility and church, with no rights to land. Over time, agricultural innovations, town growth, and the decline of serfdom improved their condition.
Explain the relationship between feudalism and the three orders. Feudalism was based on land ownership and exchange of services. The king granted land in exchange for military service and taxes. The clergy received land for religious legitimacy. The nobility contributed to defense, administration, and justice in return for land. Peasants worked the land, giving most of their produce to upper classes. The relationship among the three orders was based on land, service, and religious legitimacy.
Discuss the changes in the system of the three orders. Between the 11th and 14th centuries, changes in agriculture, growth of trade, and urbanization brought societal changes. A new class—the bourgeoisie (merchants/artisans)—emerged. The church’s power declined, the state’s power increased. Peasant rights improved, serfdom declined. Renaissance, Reformation, and the Industrial Revolution weakened the class system, which ended with the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century.
